Anodic oxidation (also known as anodizing) is a non-spontaneous electrochemical process whereby a protective layer of high resistance oxide forms on the surface of the treated metal (aluminum).
The material undergoes a true surface transformation: the raw metal reacts with the oxygen developed during the electrochemical process, giving rise to a layer of aluminum oxide or alumina, hard, colorable, and resistant to atmospheric agents.
